Using DiSC® for Both Large and Small Teams

Understanding and navigating different personality styles is essential, regardless of the size of your team or organization. Teams are made of individuals with different approaches to work, and while having a team with varied personalities is beneficial, it can also lead to more misunderstandings and conflicts. Recognizing, appreciating, and leaning into these differences is the key to building a great team—and Everything DiSC helps you do just that.

There is Value in Differences

Everything DiSC® is a behavioral assessment that reveals your workplace priorities, preferences, and tendencies. Designed to improve self-awareness and foster better relationships with coworkers, this model emphasizes that every person embodies a mix of all four DiSC styles: Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C).

It is important to remember that everyone has a distinct behavioral profile with different styles and priorities—no style is better than another. These differences bring incredible value to the workplace. By recognizing and leveraging them, organizations of all sizes can enhance communication and foster a healthier, more connected work environment.

Every Team Can Benefit from Everything DiSC®

In my role with FlashPoint on the Client Services team, I work with organizations and teams to deliver hundreds of Everything DiSC® assessments each year. And no matter the team, large or small, it always comes down to one thing: people. How we communicate, collaborate, and adapt to each other is what makes or breaks a team.

I’ve seen firsthand, both in my position at FlashPoint and as a small business owner, how the DISC assessment can create stronger connections among smaller teams. When everyone understands each other's communication styles, it makes conversations smoother and more open. With fewer people to connect, it’s easier to build a supportive environment where each person feels heard and valued. I’ve watched teams become more efficient in decision-making because they know how to leverage each other’s strengths, leading to faster problem-solving and better collaboration.

On the other hand, in larger teams, DISC plays a role in helping manage the many personalities and working styles. With so many people, misunderstandings or conflicts can arise, but DISC gives everyone a common language to discuss those differences. I’ve seen managers use it to identify how best to engage and motivate their team members, making sure everyone stays connected to the bigger picture. Even in larger settings, DISC helps people understand where they fit in, leading to stronger teamwork and clearer alignment on shared goals.

My Experience with Everything DiSC® in the Workplace

When I took the DiSC assessment myself, I started to see how my style (I’m a Di!) affected my team and how much it is woven into in all my interactions. That self-awareness helped me shift my approaches, improving communication and ultimately making our work together smoother and more productive.

This insight was especially important when working with team members across different departments. Let’s take for instance my relationship with Kara, a member of the Marketing team at FlashPoint. Kara and I have different work styles—she is an S, who is more steady-paced and structured, and I am a Di, someone who is more fast-paced and thrives under pressure.

This difference in our styles could have easily led to friction, especially when we were working on time-sensitive projects. But with DiSC, we can recognize our differences and adjust our communication accordingly. I learned to slow down a bit and take time to consider Kara's structured approach, while she understood that I work best when things move quickly. We found a middle ground where we could complement each other’s strengths—her steady pace kept us organized, while my fast-paced energy helped us meet tight deadlines. We both leaned into each other’s approaches to get the job done.

It is important to use differences to our advantage. At the end of the day, understanding personalities isn’t just about a one-time assessment. it’s about using those insights to create stronger, more connected teams. And that’s what makes the real difference!
